Violent pair on train face jail

ROBBERS who beat up a businessman on a train have been warned they face long prison sentences.

Lewis Anderson and Gavin Horwood launched a brutal assault as their victim tried to stop them stealing his laptop as he travelled through Poole.

But they did not realise their crime was being captured on high-quality CCTV which led to their arrest following the attack on November 14 last year.

Anderson, 21, of no fixed address, denied robbery but was convicted by a jury yesterday after a trial at Bournemouth Crown Court. Jurors took just an hour-and-a-half to reach their unanimous verdict.

Horwood, 20, formerly of Rochester Road, Kinson, pleaded guilty to robbery at a hearing last week. The pair will be sentenced at a date to be fixed.

Mr Recorder Timothy Mousley told Anderson: "You have been convicted of a very serious offence which is extremely likely to result in a long period of imprisonment for you and for Mr Horwood - be prepared."

The court heard London businessman Neil Grizell was travelling between Parkstone and Branksome when he became aware of a group of four young men in the carriage.

He saw Horwood take his rucksack and laptop down from an overhead shelf and told him to put it back, the court was told.

"Mr Horwood and Mr Anderson set about Mr Grizell in a quite brutal fashion," said Tim Bradbury, prosecuting. "They beat him up and left him subdued amongst the seats. They used violence to secure their objective."

Anderson told the court he had been drinking at the time of the offence and said he did not know Horwood was going to grab the rucksack and laptop. He said he did not plan to rob anyone but admitted assault, causing actual bodily harm. Mr Grizell suffered a cut to his ear and bruising to his chest and ribs.
