TOUGH LIFE IN TWO
LEGEND: Steve Fletcher
LEGEND: Steve Fletcher

STEVE Fletcher has warned Cherries to brace themselves for a rude awakening in League Two after describing the basement division as "beauty and the beast".

Fletcher helped Cherries make an instant return from the bottom flight in 2003 and also netted the opening goal in their Division Three play-off final victory over Lincoln.

The 35-year-old, who has played his entire career in the third and fourth tier of the Football League, made 39 appearances for Chesterfield in League Two last season.

He told the Daily Echo: "It's not as easy as people may think. Although we came straight back up five years ago, I think the division is a lot more competitive now than it was then.

"It could be a bit of an eye opener for anybody who thinks a repeat of the 2003 success could be on the cards. I'm not saying they won't do it, but I'm not saying they will either.

"You only have to look at some of the teams to see the standard. Bournemouth played MK Dons in the Johnstone's Paint last season and they are a decent team. I'm sure there will be times when Bournemouth will trounce teams and, at other times, it will be very difficult.

"You might get 70 to 80 per cent of teams trying to play football in League One, but you probably get 50 per cent or less in League Two. A lot of teams try to get out of the division by kicking their way out and that's something you've got to try to deal with.

"No disrespect to those teams but it can bring you down to their level. It might take one piece of quality to settle the game but it might take 85 minutes of battling to go with it.

"One week, you will be playing a long-ball team and, the next, you can go to the other extreme. It's something you need to come to terms with because there are more teams that don't play football and it's the other way around in League One.

"The lads can't expect to go to certain places and think they can play total football. I'd like to see them make me eat my words and run away with the title because the club doesn't belong in that league."

Fletcher, who turned down a second year with Chesterfield in favour of finding a club closer to home, also believes keeping the nucleus of the current Cherries squad could prove a "major factor" in them mounting a promotion bid.

He added: "I'm sure Kevin would like to keep every player but I wouldn't imagine his budget is going to be anything like it was last season.

"If he can keep players like Vokes, Kuffour and Anderton, they are going to stand a chance.

"Nothing would give me greater satisfaction than to see them bounce straight back."

Thanks for that Fletch, but we have to get there first.

"I'm not saying they won't do it, but I'm not saying they will either."

Good career as an administrator waiting for you Fletch.

Or maybe an OHEC journalist....

Solent and Express report Harry could be about to invest, through sons Mark and / or Jamie. (Surely worth investigating if if untrue!)

Still, a non-controversial story about Fletch is much safer.

Spot on you can rely on the Echo to get to the real issues cutting edge and all that .

Lets hope that bit about the Redknapps is right or at least some real money is coming from somewhere because if it isnt we wont have to worry about next season

Rather like Luton who already have been docked 15 points for the coming season. Mr Krasnor has already stated that a CVA for us is unlikely. So a 15 point deduction for us is very likely and the possibility of promotion next season is very unlikely.

So with that in mind:

What players are liklly to want to sign for us in view of this deduction ???

Who in their right mind would want to buy a season ticket when the season is over before it has even started????

Can anybody point out exactly how the club has a bright future (Mr Mostyn's own words) in view of the fact that we have been relegated and will be stranded at the foot of League Two with Luton and Rotherham and staring non-league football in the face????

Remember we are not Leeds United and do not have the strength to carry this off. The possibility of relegation to the conference is very real in view of this points deduction and the fact that we will very likly loose key players like Gowling, Cummings, Kuffour and Vokes and will face a team re-build job at the bottom of league Two.

Regards

Where does it report that Luton have already had the points deducted?

You are also telling us players that are under contact are not going to sign for us, come on let's get some facts rather than wild accusations, there is more going on at the moment than we can even guess so let's see where we are in a couple of days, but please lay off these players they are ours and are not going anywhere except maybe Gowling.

smhinto - Luton HAVE NOT had 15 points deducted. I think it was mis reported in the Sporting Life or something and grew from there. From the Leeds case, the panel made it clear that their case should not be used as a presidence, but that each case should be treated on its merits with regards to points deductions. We should be glad we do not have the other problems Luton have - with the bungs etc. They really are in deep doo doo!!

Luton have not had 15 points deducted. Each case will be judged on it's merits. Luton are in a far worse state than us - with the bung enquiries and all that too...

Thank you Simon, so that would be Luton that have not had the 15 points deducted then, what about Rotherham?
