Death of well-known football player at 47

POPULAR AND LOYAL: Rick Fletcher, from West Howe, who has died at the age of 47

TRIBUTES have been paid to a local football player who has died aged 47 after battling cancer.

Rick Fletcher turned out for South Kinson Sports for more than 20 years in the Bournemouth Sunday League.

He passed away at Christchurch Hospital and his funeral is being held on Wednesday at Bournemouth Crematorium at 3.30pm.

"I know there will be lots of people there because he was just such a popular and loyal bloke," said long-time friend and team colleague Brian Head.

"We'd like everyone to come in casual clothes, replica football shirts if possible," he added.

"Rick was a real battler and he really thought he was going to beat the illness, even just a few days before. He was a big Manchester United fan.

"They won the premiership last Sunday and he died the following day."

The South Kinson team folded a few years ago said Brian, who served at different times as both club secretary and team manager.

Rick mainly played left back or sweeper and was a talented player.

He was the eldest of six children and lived in Kinson all his life.

He leaves two children, Emma, 12 and Carla, 17.
