Fireworks will fly
THE councillor in charge of Bournemouth tourism has assured people they will still be able to enjoy Friday night fireworks this year.
The big fireworks show has been scrapped but Cllr Beverly Dunlop said fireworks would still be incorporated into the replacement show.
The new show, Enchanted Gardens, will see several smaller displays, to complement night-time attractions in the gardens.
Cllr Dunlop said: "There will be fireworks but it's going to be over a longer period of time, attracting a younger audience, and keeping people in a wider area.
"Rather than fireworks on a barge at the end of pier, it's going to be spread further down the beach - a combination of beach and barge."
Enchanted Gardens will include night-lights, an enchanted woodland walk, goblin and fairy face painting and treasure trails.
Cllr Dunlop gave the reassurance to councillors at the Children and Families Services Scrutiny Panel.
The changes look to have been inspired by both the crowd trouble at last year's big, centralised, summer fireworks shows, and the huge success of last year's Firegardens installation.

Thats great. Spread the event further down the beach. I bet the local Police are thrilled with the thought that the mindless drunken yobs will have a bigger area to harass and assault members of the public. Well thought through Beverly Dunlop.

Why do we need fireworks in the middle of summer? We are a nation of pet lovers, supposedly, yet the barmy idiots that pose as councillors want to inflict yet more misery on our pets with loud bangs and crashes. It's bad enough in winter with "Fireworks Fortnight"!
