Villagers plea over gas storage

VILLAGERS in North Dorset are joining their county councillor on Friday morning in a plea to planners over a massive gas storage project of national importance.

Mappowder residents Lizzie Bryant and Clive Holding will accompany Cllr David Fox in addressing Dorset County Council's planning committee.

They will ask for extra guarantees about the transport of Portland Gas plan to make 14 undersea gas storage chambers off Portland.

The only location where this system can link into the national gas grid is an Above Ground Installation at Mappowder.

Cllr Fox said: "There are real concerns amongst villagers that haven't been properly addressed.

"There are plans for 90 articulated 40 foot long 40 tonne lorries to come along narrow lanes and through the village in convoys of three.

"Local people need to see more detailed plans. We need more safeguards about how all this will work in practice."

I know the site at Mappowder well as I was involved with the setting up of the remote data control at the site. The residents are quite correct in that to route lorries of that size down those lanes and around some very tight bends will be very difficult but with the national dependance on gas for heating surely the national interest must take priority.

All nations have their own national interest for the transport and storage of fuel which of course will constantly change, as do the times. One thing that will not change, however, is the fact that each road and storage location could become a target for those wishing to do harm to others. Your country is one who has stood strong against terrorism and banded together for the common good, and for this I applaud you. Even though I am not a citizen of your great country, please, consider your most valuable resource, your children. Choose carefully and route transports around your town if possible, and may the good lord take a liking to all of you.
