Moving tribute to ‘generous’ Irene
 |
| LOVED COMPANY: Irene Hawkes |
THE family of the pensioner who died in suspicious circumstances at her Kinson home have paid a moving tribute to her.
Irene Hawkes, 82, was found dead at her home in Wakely Road on May 6 and detectives say they are investigating her death as they would a murder.
Widowed Mrs Hawkes died from head and chest injuries and officers are keeping an open mind as to how these injuries were caused.
Her niece Susan and brother Cecil said: "Her tragic death has shocked all the family and we trust that she may rest in peace now.
"Irene, known as Rene to the family, loved company, enjoyed laughter and had a good sense of humour.
"She was a great cook and loved nothing more than entertaining visitors at her house. She was known for her generosity."
The statement said that in her youth, Mrs Hawkes was involved in amateur dramatics and musicals and regularly sang solos for her local church choir. She was also a very keen and knowledgeable gardener and had been a member of a fuchsia society in the past.
It added: "After her move to Kinson, Rene made many good friends where she was blessed with particularly supportive neighbours to turn to when she had problems.
"She loved to go to Ireland to stay with her brother and his family."
The last confirmed sighting of Mrs Hawkes was on Monday, April 28, and detectives are keen to hear from anyone who may have heard from her after that to contact them on 01202 222222.
A 49-year-old man arrested in connection with her death has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
