Student flats plan developers submit 12-storey scheme

PLANS for a 12-storey block of student accommodation have been submitted to Bournemouth council.

The proposals would see a five-storey building in the Lansdowne area demolished and replaced with a ground floor office and 11 floors of student accommodation.

A total of 85 student bedrooms would be created, along with shared kitchen, dining and living areas and the development would be completely car-free, with only cycle storage provided.

Developers Vista Property Holdings point to research that indicates a demand for up to 1,000 student bed spaces for the University in the Lansdowne area. The same study concludes the Lansdowne is an ideal location for high density schemes because there is less risk of students causing disturbance.

And it says that creating additional purpose-built student accommodation could free up family homes in areas like Winton and Charminster.

In supporting paperwork provided to the council, the developers say: "The demand for student accommodation in the Lansdowne area is not surprising given the presence of Bournemouth University, which has a current student role of in excess of 16,000 students.

"Other educational establishments such as Bournemouth and Poole College also result in local demand for student accommodation.

"In order for these educational establishments to operate successfully and expand, it is essential that there is adequate student accommodation of a variety of types and facilities to attract prospective students to the town.

"While Bournemouth University themselves provide a significant amount of student accommodation, there is clearly a place for the private sector to provide purpose-built managed student accommodation and the application proposals are aimed at this market."

The application will be considered by the council in due course.

You can get a darn site more than 85 people on 11 floors - they're only students, for gods sake... Squash 'em in.

JC, I think 85 would be maximum. There's no point providing tiny rooms for students - they'll simply look elsewhere for a Uni that does give more space!
The students definately need more rooms and there is a big open space in Lansdowne ready for it!
