I am a Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) and work as part of my local Safer Neighbourhood Team. PS Colin Neve

My role is Safer Neighbourhood Sergeant. I manage a team of PCs, PCSOs, special constables and volunteers in tackling issues that have an impact on the community as a whole. A typical day for me involves the looking after, directing and guiding those individuals I have in my charge. It is important that I am aware of any incidents that occur on my patch, so that I can brief my team on what might be expected of them.

About this neighbourhood

The majority of the section is residential. The community is very multicultural particularly, the western end of the section where the population has changed within this last decade and is far more mixed in terms of race and culture. Our ethos of the section is high-profile, positive policing and a substantial part is by either foot or cycle, particularly in Boscombe West and Springbourne. The section runs a number of operations throughout the year to tackle issues such as drugs, anti-social behaviour and to improve road safety. With the introduction of Safer Neighbourhood Teams they provide a regular and highly visible on-street presence, tackling issues of concern to the communities they serve. Crime levels within East Bournemouth have decreased over the past three years – from 6161 offences in the year ending March 2005 to 5639 offences in the year ending March 2008, a fall of around 8.5 per cent. This represents 522 fewer victims of crime than there were three years ago. The average yearly detection rate for all crime during the same period was 30 per cent. For all of us the priorities remain the protection of life and property, maintaining the peace, the prevention and detection of crime and the arrest and prosecution of offenders.
