A GLAMOROUS mother and daughter duo will be bringing a little extra sparkle to the star-studded Strictly Burlesque show at Bournemouth Pavilion this week. Self-titled ‘Sequin’ Sue Simmerling of New Milton will be creating the costumes for the burlesque bombshells, one of whom happens to be her daughter, 25-year-old Carly.

Flamboyant feathers, showgirl sequins and beaded basques with a tantalising glimpse of knicker lace will be showcased at the Moulin Rouge style variety performance. Carly has been a professional dancer for six years and was talent spotted for the production after her performance in Aladdin with Paul O’Grady at the O2 in London. Her mother began New Milton-based Carry on Costumes more than 30 years ago and her clients include Christopher Biggins, Matthew Kelly, Stephanie Powers and Les Dennis.

Sue said: “I’m hoping to bring a little sparkle to the show with my designs which are a mix of cabaret and vintage glamour. “The first things you have to think about are movement and budget, so I work closely with the choreographer to ensure the costumes are practical and beautiful.”

Carly graduated from D&B School of Performing Arts and has appeared in the Bournemouth production of The Heat Is On and taken to the stage as lead vocalist in the Scooch UK Tour. She said: “I think I’m quite useful for my mum because I can test drive all the costumes. “We also work together designing vintage dresses for our Glag Rags Retro boutique.”

Queen of Burlesque, Immodesty Blaize, Britain’s Got Talent acrobat Valerie Murzak, and guest star Harry Derbidge from The Only Way Is Essex will be gracing the stage for the Strictly Burlesque show. Bournemouth Pavilion will be hosting the UK premiere of the unique new variety extravaganza from Thursday, August 15 to Saturday, August 17.
