Skiing has captivated our family.

Although, whilst I am truly inspired by the breathtaking scenery and the sense of escapism afforded by gently gliding down a mountain under one’s own steam I have never really mastered the craft.

Yet, I am irresistibly drawn back to the slopes, if even to marvel at my teenage sons powering down black runs whilst I meander sensibly down the blues and occasional red.

But it is such an exhilarating experience I am as happy sitting in a mountainside restaurant downing a cappuccino or, as afforded on this occasion, standing atop the pistes and taking in the magical scenery dominated by the majestic Mont Blanc, as I am plummeting down the nearvertical runs.

This time we had an additional person in tow, in the form of a two-year-old, which meant I had a whole new wealth of experiences to re-discover including the simple thrills of tobogganing and building snowmen.

Out varied ages meant we scrutinised the potential resort as never before and we came up with an inspired choice - Les Arc 1950, one of four villages at varying heights.

A huge bonus is that it is a car-free village and the only obstacles are the skiers and the occasional wayward toboggan and of course you can ski straight to your door.

Everywhere in the village there are games, toboggan runs and bouncy structures for your kids to enjoy.

The daily entertainment programme ensures that there is all they need to have fun with their friends and family.

Les Arcs is part of the Paradiski area, with its highly-impressive 425km of pistes. It has 69 black, 127 red, 257 blue and 22 green runs, as well as 153km of crosscountry trails.

Skiing varies from gentle runs through the trees, to high-altitude skiing on the glacier. A high percentage of the runs in Les Arcs are above 2500m, giving it a long season of snow-sure skiing.

There are snow parks and a magnificent high-altitude toboggan run that seemed to go forever. Arc 1950 is the newest of the Les Arcs villages and the attention to detail is impressive.

It is built in traditional Savoyard style, its buildings made of timber and stone. This is a truly luxurious resort with all the shops and facilities you need within a snowball’s throw.

Each morning I made the short walk to the boulangerie for baguettes and pain au chocolate. Suitably fortified, we headed out to the slopes. The ski lift was a minute’s ski away.

Skiing in Arc 1950 means having access to the whole of Paradiski, the world’s second largest ski area, linked by one of Europe’s largest cable cars, the Vanoise Express.

It’s a huge playground at the entrance to the Vanoise National Park - a protected area of 53,000 hectares - with modern infrastructures, fast, comfortable lifts and a variety of areas for all styles and levels from beginner skiers to experienced riders.

Arc 1950 is very much targeted at families and couples and the accommodation is exceptional.

The service from the company, prior to booking, and in the resort and apartments, was exceptional and it was a hassle-free experience from beginning to end.

I have skied (badly) across Europe but this was the most enjoyable, relaxing and rewarding visit to the slopes yet.

It is fair to say that we have found our perfect Alpine resort and the greatest recommendation I can give is that we will be back, probably several times if the two-year old shows the same propensity for the slopes as her brothers.
