Take one step inside the Baglioni Hotel and you’ll be dazzled.

Not just by the Italian-inspired luxe decor, but also by the friendliness of the staff and exceptionally warm greeting.

Sometimes five-star hotels can seem a little intimidating to those of us who don’t frequent them regularly, but within minutes of stepping foot inside the immaculately decorated foyer and reception, we were put at ease.

Situated opposite Kensington Palace and the beautiful gardens, the smart-looking building with its outside terrace stood out despite being on a street filled with other hotels.

The staff can’t do enough to help you; we were met by a porter who immediately whisked our bags to our room – a deluxe twin suite; a real treat for someone who usually thinks Premier Inns are a luxury from the ubiquitous Travelodges.

The room was beautifully presented with a comfy sofa, two flat-screen televisions, mini-bar, espresso coffee machine, and a marble bathroom big enough to fit all the above and more.

The hotel is flawless, from the superb service to the decor.

Part of a small chain of nine – and the only Baglioni in the UK – the group prides itself on its intimacy, detail and luxury.

We were booked in for afternoon tea in the plush main lounge area downstairs.

And while afternoon tea may be ten-a-penny nowadays, the Baglioni’s twist on the traditional was inspired.

With delicious sandwiches including a foccacia option along with dainty cakes and biscuits, the scones and cream with Nutella was so delicious, if I close my eyes I can still taste it.

We didn’t need to eat again that day, and that’s without even finishing what was exquisitely served up to us.

After a fantastic night at the Piccadilly Theatre to see Jersey Boys – the hotel is just a few minutes walk from Kensington High Street tube station – we returned to find our beds had been turned down, water and glasses arranged on the bedside tables with rugs and slippers laid out too.

Sinking into the comfy bed with gorgeous sheets, I was reminded once again of the five-star rating.

Waking refreshed, we were torn between ordering room service and ambling down to breakfast.

In the end we took breakfast in the lounge and were not disappointed.

Freshly squeezed juice, beautiful cappuccino, a dish of freshly baked pastries to die for, the choice was endless.

In the end I plumped for the Baglioni breakfast – an array of Italian meats with the best scrambled egg I have ever eaten in my life.

To try and work off our gluttony, we strolled across to Kensington Gardens en route to the V&A museum’s marvellous wedding dress exhibition, which was included with our offer.

Dodging runners, pushchairs and cycle groups, it really gave a snapshot of city life at the weekend.

We even decided to rent Boris Bikes on the way back, and rode around the Serpentine and Hyde Park, joining hundreds of others enjoying the sunshine.

Flopping out on our sofa for a lazy Sunday afternoon sojourn, the comfort and peace of the hotel provided a haven from the hustle and bustle.

Reluctant to leave the next morning, we both vowed to return very soon – as a special treat to ourselves.
