AN acknowledgement to a 20th century icon takes centre stage this week. Christine Bovill’s interpretation of Edith Piaf comes to Shelley Theatre on Friday as part of Mervyn Stutter’s monthly Pick Of The Fringe.

Christine told the Echo: “Without giving too much away, this isn’t about someone imitating with a wig. This represents my life story. It all stems back to a fascination with jazz and cabaret from a young age. I studied French at Stirling University and then I became a teacher. I then decided to quit the profession and progress my career within entertainment.

“Whilst Piaf has such a distinctive sound, my respect goes much deeper than that. This is someone who had a such a strong work ethic and approach to their craft. She is one of the most celebrated performers of the 20th century. Sharing this with audiences throughout the world gives a glimpse into an international star.”

Joining Christine on Friday will be pianist Michael Roulston. “Michael is an orchestra in himself,” says Christine. “His French cabaret sound is something unlike any other. I have performed with orchestras throughout the world, to perform in an intimate setting with a simple format (vocal and piano) is something I love.”

Christine was awarded the Spirit Of The Fringe at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017 and has performed on Mervyn Stutter’s Pick Of The Fringe since 2013.

She added: “Whilst home is Scotland, I love what the south of England has to offer and look forward to spending some time there this week.”
