A KEY episode in Tudor history will be played out at the Tivoli Theatre in Wimborne from October 16-18 when Wimborne Drama presents A Man For All Seasons, Robert Bolt’s critically acclaimed play about the dramatic downfall of Sir Thomas More, Chancellor to Henry VIII.

A Man For All Seasons was written for the stage by Robert Bolt in 1960 and later adapted for the screen, starring Paul Scofield and John Hurt and winning six Oscars including best film.

The play brings the characters of Tudor history to vibrant life and offers a brilliant portrait of Sir Thomas More in his last years as Lord Chancellor of England.

When Henry VIII fails to obtain a divorce from Catherine of Aragon to marry Anne Boleyn, he breaks away from the Catholic Church and establishes himself as Head of The Church of England. As a committed Catholic, Sir Thomas cannot in good conscience continue in his role as Chancellor.

Neither Thomas Cromwell, family, friends nor the King himself are able to convince More as he maintains his integrity and belief in silence. The pressure mounts as the King goes on to mandate his subjects, on penalty of high treason, to swear to The Act of Succession, which declares his first marriage illegal. As the wolves gather, More finds that his silence can no longer keep him safe.

A Man For All Seasons charts the dramatic downfall of a man who paid the ultimate price when personal conscience clashed with supreme power.

This production is directed by Tracey Nicholls and stars Sam Moulton as Thomas More. Also appearing are Chris Brown, John Bruton, Rob Cording, Chris Durham, Tony Feltham, Claire Hutton, Penny Pearson, Colin Pile, John Sivewright, Michael J Smith and Verena Smith-Maurer.

There are evening performances at 7.30pm on Thursday, October 16, 17 and 18. There is also a 2.30pm matinee on Saturday, October 18.
