ONE of my golden rules is that I always try to get an Indian takeaway from a restaurant, but several friends’ recommendations persuaded me to break the habit of a lifetime for this Castle Lane joint.
And hey, in for a penny in for a pound, I went for full-on rebellion by eating a takeaway on a week night – a treat virtually unheard of in the Vass household!
This bold move allowed us to try one of Naz’s £10 mid-week specials. There were three choices of menu, each incorporating two starters, two curries, rice and a side dish.
Our choice featured an onion bhaji and chicken tikka to start, a chicken masala and chicken pathia, a sag aloo, pilau rice, poppadoms, onion salad and mint sauce.
The portions were a slightly reduced size – about two-thirds of a normal takeaway serving – but it was perfect for two hungry people and we couldn’t fault the quality of any of the food.
The chicken tikka starter was deliciously tender while the masala curry, which we would never normally order, was a real gem. Finished with just a swirl of cream, it wasn’t overly rich and had a deep, almost fruity taste.
In contrast, the pathia was ferociously fiery and needed to be approached with caution. I feared I was doing my tastebuds permanent damage but it was so addictive that, like a moth to a flame, I kept going back for more.
A mid-week bargain that proves that sometimes, just sometimes, rules are made to be broken.
