SET beside the banks of the meandering River Avon is where you’ll find the lovely pub and restaurant The George at Fordingbridge.
With the sun shining, our group of three easily found a waterside table and braced ourselves for a spot of alfresco dining.
Perusing the expansive menu you’ll find a delicious array of fresh food and an extraordinary collection of wines.
My merry band of hungry diners decided to select a summer choice of cuisine and opted for salads and fresh fish.
These included a classic Greek salad with tomatoes, feta cheese, tzatziki and olives. This proved to be a mouth-wateringly good choice and perfect for a hot afternoon.
Another salad dish chosen was the fresh salmon Niçoise, with fine beans, potato, free-range egg, olives and tomatoes. Another inspired meal that looked as green as the view of the Hampshire countryside from our table.
Being particularly hungry, I fancied something a little more substantial and plumped for the fillet of cod with salt and vinegar batter.
This was accompanied with handcut chips, The George’s tartar sauce, minted peas and lemon. While enjoying lunch we sat back and enjoyed the wildlife on display such as ducks, dragonflies and Fordingbridge locals having a paddle in the river.
Inside The George, the contemporary décor is tastefully done and complements the undoubted age of the building.
The venue sits comfortably as a jack-of-all-trades offering a bar, restaurant and pub experience.
If you want to soak up the atmosphere of Fordingbridge, there is no better way than watching the world float by.
Our meals came to the best part of £30 and included a pint of Guinness, a glass of red wine and a soft drink.
