THINK of 1812 and you may be reminded of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 overture. But the 1812 bar and restaurant in Bournemouth is renowned for much funkier, live music at the weekends.

And this place has more strings to its bow than music. The bar and restaurant at The Royal Exeter Hotel in Exeter Road has gained a reputation for serving some of the best cocktails and food in the area and has won numerous awards over the years.

Earlier this month, it won the Dorset Tourism prize for a great night out, which was enough to justify another visit in my book.

The restaurant, situated at the back of the bar which was buzzing with revellers, is tastefully furnished in chocolate browns and deep reds with dark wood, faux leather chairs, flock wallpaper and abstract art.

There is plenty of choice on the menu to whet your appetite. For starters I was tempted by the Dorset Blue Vinney, apple and walnut salad, but couldn’t resist the scallops which proved to be a good choice.

The pan-fried scallops were succulent and meaty and served on a bed of peppery rocket leaves with roasted red peppers and chorizo which added a robust flavour that complemented, rather than over-powered, the more delicate flavour of the scallops.

My husband opted for the moules mariniere as a starter portion (you can also have it as a main course). The mussels were soft and fleshy and drenched in a rich, creamy white wine sauce which had a lovely tang of fresh tarragon.

For mains, my husband predictably plumped for the 10oz sirloin steak which was cooked to his taste and served with a small jug of peppercorn sauce, two Portobello mushrooms, a vine plum tomato and chunky hand cut chips which were artistically arranged on the plate.

He was soon raving about how good it all was, but I was too busy savouring every mouthful of my roasted salmon steak which was deliciously tender and perched on a generous portion of creamy kedgeree risotto and sautéed spinach.

For dessert I ordered the dark chocolate mousse which was meant to be served with a chocolate crisp. It was sweet enough to satisfy any sweet tooth without being too rich.

Although it’s not cheap, the food is good quality and every dish is thoughtfully executed. This is a perfect place for a special occasion if you want a lively atmosphere. You too, might even go into overtures about it!
