IF you're hankering for a taste of the Far East, but can't be bothered to leave the comfort of your own home, then Lam's Catering will literally bring "the restaurant" to you - pots, pans and all.

The husband and wife team Christine Mak and Wan Kit Lam who are originally from Hong Kong, started their catering business in 2007 and use their home at Merley near Wimborne as their base.

Not only do they provide all the ingredients, do all the cooking and washing up, they also provide cutlery, crockery and chopsticks as well as paper napkins and tablecloths.

They even brought their own tea towels and washing up liquid. All I had to do was to provide the wine, place mats and glasses.

But what really sells this service is the quality of the food.

Christine explains: "We offer authentic Cantonese food. Almost everything is made from scratch - 99 per cent is home made. We even make our own dipping sauces."

The couple are like a well oiled machine. They seemed to instinctively know how everything worked in our kitchen. It was as if they cooked in our home every night - I wish.

For starters we had prawn crackers and satay chicken on bamboo skewers with a homemade satay sauce and a mixture of dim sum which Christine explained is one of her husband's specialities.

We had steamed dumplings stuffed with shrimp, Shanghai grilled pork dumplings and crispy king prawns with a salad style sauce rather than soy which was an inspired twist.

A friend of mine who lived in Hong Kong for 23 years, said it was the best dim sum she had tasted since she left. Other starters included Szechuan smoked chicken and crispy aromatic duck with pancakes.

For mains we were treated to shredded beef in chilli, chicken with cashews and seasonal greens in a yellow bean sauce, chilli king prawns, roasted pork stir fry with vegetables and Chinese mushrooms served with young chow fried rice and Singapore fried rice noodles.

It was hard to find fault with any of the dishes and there was easily enough food to feed ten people.

Dessert was perfectly pitched with fresh pineapple and banana fritters, homemade chocolate dipping sauce and a couple of marshmallows and sweet treats on the side washed down with cups of Jasmine tea.

Everyone agreed it was much more relaxing and comfortable to dine at home. And the icing on the cake is that the chef cleaned up and left us with a spotless kitchen.
