VEGETABLE boxes delivered to your door are all the rage.

But how fresh is that onion?

Has it been transported across the world in freight, packaged in many locations before being packed into a box and driven miles to your door?

Having sampled many vegetable boxes in the last year I have to confess I am a big fan and I can honestly say our household’s cooking habits have changed as a result.

But it wasn’t until I started considering the food miles involved that I started to check which farms the produce was from.

And that’s when I came across a Dorset organic farm called Goldhill Organics, who pride themselves on delivering the Dorset countryside to your door. Every week deliveries are made four days a week to households and businesses all over Dorset.

All the farm’s produce is seasonal so the vegetables are tailored to what they have available.

The boxes range from small, which costs £12.75, medium (for one to two people) £16.75 or a large one which costs £19.75 and will be enough for four or more people.

But here’s the best bit. All their vegetables are picked that day.

They are hand-picked, hand-packed and hand delivered.

In order to test how fresh they were I ordered a box.

Now call me boring, but I get really excited at the sight of a vegetable box and instantly start planning how I will cook it all.

When the Goldhill organics box arrived you could just smell how fresh it was.

The leeks smelt incredible and I’m not sure I’ve ever smelt onions like that.

I was instantly taken back to memories of my nana coming in with a box of fresh vegetables from her allotment.

Although the Goldhill farm has been running for years, the vegetable delivery boxes are a relatively new enterprise started seven months ago by husband and wife duo Jane and Nick Somper.

They moved with their family from London to Goldhill farm five years ago after falling in love with the magic of the farm and the Cross family, who have owned the farm for decades, years ago.

Jane started off working at the popular shop but soon realised that people wanted to buy their vegetables round the clock, and not just when the shop is open.

“The farm has lots of loyal customers who were asking for the vegetables to be delivered so we thought we’d take this amazing produce to the people,” she said. “We’ve been really pleased with the response so far and we’ve had lots of custom through word of mouth.”

Goldhill has rallied tremendous support on Twitter where @GoldhillOrganic has more than 2,500 followers, who can observe everyday farm life and their produce being picked.

All of this just adds to the offering and cements the fact that you are getting vegetables from the ground to your door in a matter of hours.

Jane said their customers are varied but it includes large families, retired couples, busy working professionals as well as groups of pensioners, who split the boxes between them.

“Our biggest priority is that the vegetables are seasonal,” says Jane.

“People don’t really ask us for out of season vegetables because that’s not what we offer.”

Customers are able to go onto the website or call to find out what is in this week’s box and ask for certain items to be swapped if they have a particular dislike.

Goldhill are not the only vegetable box company operating in Dorset, there are plenty of little greengrocers, shops and stalls offering the service alongside the national giants such as Abel and Cole and Riverford Organics.

But what they can offer is a slice of organic magic delivered from the ground to your door in a day.

And for those of you, like me, who do not have the time or space to grow our own vegetables, it is a real lifesaver.
