DESPITE a good, original(ish) concept – in a world where no one can lie, a “loser” discovers the ability to do so – the film falls down on so many levels you’ve got scraped knees by the end.
Ricky Gervais plays the one and only character he ever can, which, to be fair, is quite funny, but the film as a whole fails to raise enough laughs, slipping into sticky sentiment far too easily, and over-complicating the premise unnecessarily – the idea that never lying would turn us into unfeeling automatons seems odd and far from the mark.
Having to suspend disbelief to too large an extent also ruins the sense of enjoyment, and mediocre acting by the stars compounds the disappointment.
