The Crown’s Claire Foy will lead the way for British newcomers at the Emmy Awards after a host of UK stars won nominations.

The Night Of’s Riz Ahmed netted his first two tips and 13-year-old debutante Millie Bobby Brown was also nominated for Stranger Things as was Westworld’s Thandie Newton.

Britons pack out the category of lead actor in a limited series with Ahmed, Fargo’s Ewan McGregor and Benedict Cumberbatch with Sherlock: The Lying Detective all vying for the accolade, as candidates were announced in Los Angeles on Thursday.

Foy is up for lead actress in a drama series for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the Netflix show The Crown, which scored 13 nominations.

With 22 nominations apiece, HBO sci-fi Westworld and comedy series Saturday Night Live, which has seen a resurgence with its Donald Trump satire, led the way for most tips.

Westworld’s Anthony Hopkins won his first Emmy nomination for 27 years and will face The Americans’ Matthew Rhys for lead actor in a drama series.

Hopkins’ co-star Newton and Brown, who plays hero Eleven in Stranger Things, were nominated for supporting actress in a drama series.

McGregor got a second nomination for his narration of Wild Scotland while Rhys and Ahmed were also nominated for their guest appearances on Girls.

James Corden’s The Late Late Show will face off in the variety talk series category with Birmingham’s John Oliver, who netted eight nominations for his US political show Last Week Tonight.

Other shows to lead the way are Stranger Things with 18, Veep with 17 and Big Little Lies and Fargo, both on 16.

The Crown, Stranger Things and Westworld are all up for best drama series while Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror: San Junipero and Sherlock: The Lying Detective are up for best television movie.

Veep’s Anna Chlumsky and S.W.A.T. actor Shemar Moore hosted the nominations at the Wolf Theatre.

Last year’s ceremony was dominated by Game Of Thrones when it scooped 38 prizes, making it the most-awarded narrative show in Emmy history.

But this year it is absent from the list because, with the new season premiering on Sunday, none of its episodes fell within the competition limits.

TV presenter Stephen Colbert will host the 69th Emmy Awards at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles on September 17.
