The catwalks have spoken and the latest must-have hair and make up trends that are hot for spring/summer 2014 are in. Make-up fluctuating from bright orange lipsticks and purple eye shadows to high-gloss shine and powerful androgyny hairstyles; it’s the season of surprising styles!

One-trend hair looks

High shine – Almost wet but glossy not greasy, this is a killer shine. From gelled sides to slicked-back roots seen on the runways of Kenzo and House of Holland, this flat-to-the-head look works best when the hair flows into a sleek low ponytail or with loose lengths revealing a contrasting matte texture.

Messy plaits – Super easy to do and always looks funky without the need of trying too hard, plaits are back and require very little maintenance. Just remember to apply good holding hairspray after styling to keep that cute, carefree look almost perfect!

True romance – Staying with the easy-going, nonchalant approach, ethereal up-dos are completely in, and are the perfect solution if you’re looking for wedding and party hair inspiration. Simply by taking small sections of your hair, twisting it around your finger and clipping it up, this creates an aura of effortless romance, and the quicker you do it, the better it looks.

Accessories – Softening other hair trends such as the androgynous high shine look, a cute, girly touch via an accessory achieves just this. The catwalks paraded leather wraps and clips, but the oversized, bold bows proved to be my favourite take on the trend. Designer Roksanda Ilincic set the look, and already Alexa Chung is showcasing the adorable style. To keep accessories within the realm of chic, let your clean hair be your blank canvas and adopt the saying of “less is more”.

On-trend make-up looks

Bright orange lips – By using a chunky glide-on pencil, lips will appear loud and proud this season in ‘out-there’ varying tones of orange. Neon and coral shades were seen splashed over pouts on the catwalks. At Rag & Bone models wore a matte lipstick, at Creatures of the Wind the lipstick finish was a satin textured and at Prabal Gurung, the look was neon-bright. Look to Revlon and Nars for orange inspiration.

Aquatic eyes – If there’s a single shade to apply on and around the eyes this season, it’s got to be a bold blue hue. It’s a continuation from 2013 when the trend returned, but this season there’s something for everyone from a subtle liner to blocks of shadow. Marc by Marc Jacobs adorned eyes with an electric blue eye shadow that was arrestingly dense, while Giorgio Armani showcased a wash of turquoise, appearing almost transparent.

False lashes top AND bottom – Imagine ’60s doe-eyed make up with endearing feathery lashes against the top and bottom eyelids. The result – a modern Jane Birkin, or a super sex-kitten who will always get her way. Proving to be a big beauty hit at London Fashion Week, Jean-Pierre Braganza and Holly Fulton decorated eyes in false lashes top and bottom to create double the impact!

Barefaced beauty – A beauty trend that shouldn’t be one, but ironically enough the biggest makeup trend for spring/summer 2014 is for little or no make up. The au naturel look can seem terrifying for the majority of us who don’t possess flawless complexions, but ultimately the key is about having well-conditioned skin, a clever concealer, a good lip conditioner and a light foundation that leaves a natural glow and tint. Be brave and embrace your true beauty!

Until next time, stay beautiful!
