The Heat Is On: Pier Theatre, Bournemouth

Local boy made good, Russ Spencer from Scooch, is flying the flag for family favourite songs from stage and screen with the return of this super soaring holiday show.

Britain’s best loved Eurovision failure - he and his band crash landed into second to last place in Helsinki three years ago - Russ bounced back in style.

Projects have included loads more work with Scooch, a stint as the Childcatcher in the touring production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and this feelgood, singalong production which plays the Pier every Friday through the summer.

A celebration of all-time favourites from musicals and movies from the last three decades, it features a company of singers and dancers delivering hits from Mama Mia, Grease, Saturday Night Fever, Glee, Dirty Dancing, Footloose, Flashdance, Hairspray and many more.

It may be entertainment on a budget but the quality is good and the song and dance routines get toes-tapping within seconds of it hitting the stage.

Alongside Russ, the show includes two more local talents too - singers Chris Manning from Fame Academy and Michelle Wright, who before launching a career that took her to the West End, was a worthy winner of the Daily Echo’s Star Trail talent contest.

There’ support too from dancers from the Stagewise Theatre School.

*The Heat Is on plays Bournemouth’s Pier Theatre on July 30, August 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th and September 3rd. It is at Weymouth Pavilion on Thursday August 19.
