Drummer, pianist, songwriter and producer, Tokio Myers brought his show to the O2 in Boscombe on Thursday night and blew the place away.

After an extended intro that left you expecting Darth Vader to appear out of the mist, Tokio leapt onto his drum riser and got to work.

His mix of pounding drumming, mellow piano and samples from the likes of Talking Heads as well as his own compositions, gave the crowd something a bit different from your normal gig. .

One minute the crowd were jumping along to a pumping drum line the next you could have heard a pin drop in the absolute silent crowd as he played a delicate piano piece.

Four songs in and he made a foray into the pit to be greeted by a couple who got engaged there and then.

A few songs later and it was time for a rendition of Happy Birthday to Connor, a member of his crew, whilst the rest of the crew dealt with a technical hitch.

He seems to be happy to be living in the moment and eager to share his mood with the crowd, resulting in a feeling of a real shared experience rather than the distance you sometime feel from the band on stage.

To call this a one-man show would be unfair on the sound and light team who delivered a brilliant show all of their own, not to mention the rest of the tour crew who put the gig on.

It was the talent of Tokio that shone through and made the night something a little bit special.
