Michael Bolton's legendary mullet may be long gone, but he is still instantly recognisable as the powerfully-voiced king of ballads.

Headlining the last night of the Upton festival to an appreciative and enthusiastic audience, he staged an excellent greatest hits show.

And, given that most of his hits have been covers, there was a great familiarity about the set.

Thus we had Stand By Me, To Love Somebody, Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay, That's Life and Ain't No Mountain High Enough.

However, he was at his best when singing the blues, such as Sweet Home Chicago or recent single Old Time Rock'n'Roll.

And he even popped up in the audience, suddenly surrounded by a sea of phones, performing When A Man Loves A Woman.

His band was slick, but interminable sax solos made the whole thing feel a bit too much like Las Vegas cabaret rather than a festival.
