Energetic, self-deprecating and at times downright filthy, Sara Pascoe is a delight to watch.

The Essex-born comedian and regular panellist on the likes of Mock The Week and Have I Got News For You has been touring her Animal stand-up show since last year – and no topic is off-limits.

From Brexit to Uber, pubic hair, God, ‘toxic white feminism’, veganism and the romantic lives of glow worms, the comic segues between concepts in a fashion that sometimes makes little sense, but always delivers lots of laughs.

Dissecting the subject matters that keep us all awake at night – whether it’s ‘What does it mean to be a good person?’ or contemplating the frustrations of truffle-hunting lady pigs – Pascoe’s a master at twisting oblique premises to deliver tremendous pay-offs.

However, even Sara is left struggling for words when someone in the crowd tells a fellow punter to be quiet.

“Did you just shush me or someone else?” she asks, before the audience member confirms the latter and tells her to “carry on”. Noise police both acknowledged and admonished, she delivers the closing section of a show that starts brilliantly and just gets better as the call-backs and narrative join up.

Next door in the Pavilion Theatre, there’s an 80s Mania event going on, much to Pascoe’s amusement – so much so that she promises to sing a Wham! song as her finale.

No stranger to singing following her performance of Sia’s Chandelier on Let’s Sing and Dance for Comic Relief, she’s true to her word.

Singing along to a version of Wake Me Up Before You Go Go in the Pavilion’s Ballroom is probably less of a career highlight compared to her Red Nose escapades. But it’s funny, genuine and encapsulates everything that makes her such a great comedian.

Somewhere in the second verse, Sara relinquishes us from the karaoke nightmare before heading for her book stand to meet fans.

And there are plenty of them.
