Lee Nelson - Weymouth Pavilion October 6, 2015

Lee Nelson in a suit?! What’s going on? No worries though, as he hasn’t ditched his cheeky chav character, just the trainers, shorts t-shirt and baseball cap.

From the off Lee (Simon Brodkin, a former doctor) is bouncing off the audience, relentlessly taking the mick out of individuals. He continues this throughout the two-hour show in between his character’s dim-witted observations on relationships and the state of the world.

Watching his TV show I always wondered whether the audience banter was staged, but when you see him live it’s clearly not. A large part of show is off the cuff. And he’s brilliant at it.

This is the guy who crashed Kanye West’s set at Glastonbury last year and who threw money at Sepp Blater during a Swiss press conference, for which he may still stand trial. So a rowdy Weymouth crowd proved no problem for his scathing wit and razor sharp putdowns as the hecklers’ outbursts descended into a mixture of unintelligible and nonsensical.

Lee sails oftens close to the edge of casual sexism and racism but his winning smile gets him off the hook. He is only joking after all.

At the end of the show he brings a barstool on stage and encourages questions from the audience. It’s because he says Weymouth has given him the best reception on the tour so far – four bars on his phone throughout the show. Legend!
