CD REVIEW - MELODY GARDOT - CURRENCY OF MAN
THIS album marks a change of pace for traditional jazz vocalist Gardot.
Sultrier, darker and deeper, Gardot this is a good step away from her well trodden easy listening style.
Whilst there is still the chance to slump in a chair and relax to the uplifting Norah Jones-like Morning Sun, things get heavier and bluesier on tracks like She Don't Know.
Powerful and stirring Preacherman, an instant classic, was written in memory of black teenager Emmett Till whose racially motivated murder in the 1950s marked a landmark moment in the Civil Rights movement.
Gardot has defied all expectations with this album which is modern jazz at its most potent, fizzing with world music sounds, gospel choirs and steamy soul. Her best yet.
