“ALRIGHT MY LOVERS.”

Pete Doherty was in his element back in Dorset on Monday night as beer flew through the air and fans rushed the stage throughout.

The former Blandford schoolboy was on the edge of genius and calamity throughout his show in Poole and I think the feeling that the night could end at any moment was half the appeal.

By the time Doherty ambled onto the Mr Kyps stage  it was gone 10pm but he was bang on form.

With all the stories of rock ‘n’ roll excess, his talents as a gifted songwriter and guitarist maybe get forgotten.

The sound of his semi-accoustic guitar accompanied by his violinist was pretty impressive. She played excellently despite having beer sprayed over her by Doherty himself at one point.

Songs from his days in the Libertines like Don’t Look Back into The Sun and Can’t Stand Me Now were met by a joyous throng of fans, the baying mosh pit making it feel more like a punk gig than two performers on string instruments.

He chatted to the crowd between songs about his time at St Leonards Middle School, read poems from a fan's diary, gave the microphone to drunk revellers to sing and poured beer down the back of his own neck to keep cool.

Doherty was cheered off stage and some people left before he reappeared later for a second encore, others rushing back to the front.

Everyone was buzzing as they left, having got exactly the drama they wanted from him.
