LOCK up your daughters and secure your valuables as Bournemouth band Western Sand mean business.
They rock hard and have just been selected from our Unsigned bands to support Baby Godzilla at The Anvil tonight.
The track Welcome To The Badland is taken from their second EP and is our Daily Echo and O2 Academy Unsigned song of the week.
The song is a no holds barred statement of intent from the four-piece, as front man Tyler Hains explains: “Welcome To The Badlands was one of the first songs we recorded for the EP, but the last one we wrote. It’s almost an introduction to Western Sand.
“It represents who we are and what we do.”
Established in 2008, Western Sand has played some big support acts over the years that include rock royalty such as Nazareth and Black Star Riders.
“It was a career highlight supporting Black Star Riders, stepping out on stage at Shepherds Bush and walking out alone in front of thousands of people.
“We looked at each other and thought ‘ok here we go, it’s time to show what we’re made of.’”
Playing live is of vital importance to the band and informs the songwriting process.
“Being on stage is the biggest part for us and letting people know we’re around.
“We love recording and hearing our music back, but we’re constantly thinking how this is going to sound live. We always have two or three versions of each song so we can swap and change them for a live show.”
The boys are currently hard at work in the studio putting the finishing touches to a forthcoming EP.
“We wanted to give everyone another taste of what we have to offer. We released the EP in July last year and now we’re back in the studio. Next week we’ll be finishing off the vocals for our next EP that will be out in November.”
Western Sand have a point to prove and the new EP will be accompanied by a string of local dates.
“We’ll see how the new material goes down. Supporting Black Star Riders told us we were on the right track.
“You can throw as much bad stuff as you can at us, but we’ll charge on through and keep going.”
