“WHY are you shouting at me?” asked my girlfriend when I arrived home from Motorhead’s thunderous gig on Friday night.
The reason was simple, I was very nearly deaf. So much so that I couldn’t sleep that night for the ringing in my ears, but it was worth it.
Kicking off proceedings were veteran metal outfit Girls School, who delivered a punchy set that blew the cobwebs out of the Windsor Hall.
999 Emergency, Come On Let’s Go and Screaming Blue Murder were particular highlights and the lively gals certainly did enough to warrant further listening out of school hours.
Next up were punk legends The Damned, who ripped through their back catalogue, in what seemed like a brief set.
Elouise and Smash It Up, were probably the highlights but disappointingly they didn’t play New Rose.
After The Damned there was no more procrastinating before the main event and Motorhead stomped on stage, where they orchestrated carnage for the best part of two glorious hours with raw, no-holds-barred rock..
Typically, much of what Lemmy sang (well, grunted) was impossible to make out – it sounded like Satan shouting through a megaphone, mid-Armageddon.
Iron Fist, Kill By Death and Stay Clean were ear-perforatingly loud and proving they haven’t lost their touch, the tracks they played off their latest album, Motorize, were no quieter.
Predictably it was Overkill, with its monumental drum solo, and Ace Of Spades that turned the mosh pit into a veritable black hole, sucking much of the crowd into it.
As they left the stage Motorhead surveyed the damage, gave a wave and coolly sauntered off – their work here was done.
Loud, energetic and in exceptional form, there’s still plenty of juice in the Motorhead tank yet.
