The trouble with having a huge international hit (Standing in the Way of Control) with a band fronted by a huge international celebrity (Beth Ditto) is that people tend to forget the stock in trade of any band is music.
And so it is with Music for Men, a passionate blend of disco, punk, soul and old-fashioned rock ’n’ roll, but it does suffer from sounding a bit too close to that song.
Love Long Distance and 8th Wonder could have used some subtlety from producer Rick Rubin, whose best work is characterised more by what he leaves out than what he puts in.
Men in Love offers more promise with its super trouper beats, but Dimestore Diamond cries out for something extra as it hurtles towards the inconsequential.
