Vena Portae, Vena Portae

Australian singer-songwriter Emily Barker, best known for fronting Emily Barker and The Red Clay Halo, got together with fellow Aussie musicians Dom Coyote and Ruben Engzell to record this side project, and their collaborative effort works an absolute treat.

Mainly acoustic, with Barker’s wonderful vocals well to the fore, the album was recorded in a makeshift studio at Engzell’s parents’ house.

Opening with the brooding Summer Kills, Vena Portae could easily be compared to the likes of the Civil Wars and fellow Aussies, Angus And Julia Stone, such is the expert musicianship and lovely vocals from Barker.

Check out the likes of Turning Key and Magpie’s Carol for a taste of what is on offer here. It seems whichever project Barker is involved in, she comes up trumps.

You can see Vena Portae playing live at the Purbeck Folk Festival this Sunday.
