LONDONER Anna Calvi first sprung to prominence with her eponymous debut album in 2011, which garnered huge plaudits from critics and saw her deservedly nominated for a Brit award and the coveted Mercury Music Prize, although she lost out to PJ Harvey’s Let England Shake.
Nevertheless, it was quite an achievement for a relatively novice singer-songwriter. Now 33, Calvi may have taken nearly two years to deliver the follow-up, but it was well worth the wait – this album’s another dark, brooding, yet mesmerising set of songs, made all the more haunting by her wonderful vocals.
First single Eliza gives a fine taste of what’s to come, and the quality never wavers throughout the 11 tracks, with Sing To Me and Bleed Into Me simply magical.
