NINETEEN-year-old Jess Stickley from Verwood was celebrating on Sunday as she entered the top 20 of the music charts.
Jess is one third of girl band Girls Can’t Catch, whose new single Echo is currently residing at number 19 in the UK charts.
“I would have just been happy with number 39!” laughs the former Ferndown School student.
“We got a phone call on Sunday afternoon as we were driving back from a gig in Manchester to say that we’d charted at 19 and we all went crazy.
“Then we got another call to say that Reggie Yates wanted us to come in to the Radio 1 chart show for a chat, so we did that.
“Sunday night I got back home to Verwood and all my friends had hidden in my house and surprised me with party poppers! It was a brilliant day.”
Sam Revell interviewed Jess for our Saturday magazine earlier this month. If you missed it, click the link below to read it.
And don't miss this weekend's Magazine for an interview with Vampire Diaries actress Nina Dobrev
Jess has been invited back to her old school tomorrow to talk to her former teachers and sign copies of the single for students. She was still a student at Ferndown when she was asked to join the girl band last year after being spotted performing in a competition in New York.
“A year ago this month I was just a sixth-form student, and if you’d told me then that in a year’s time I’d have a single in the charts I wouldn’t have believed you,” she says.
“I went to HMV in Bournemouth last week to buy a copy of Echo and the guy behind the counter asked me ‘So can you catch?’ It totally made my day.
“Just to still be in the Top 40 this Sunday would be brilliant, but who knows, maybe we’ll move even higher up.”
The band’s debut single Keep Your Head Up charted at number 26 last year and Girls Can’t Catch’s debut album is due to be released in the spring.
