NEXT month, Poole will play host to its first Beer and Bluegrass Festival on July 24-25 at St Aldhelms Hall in Branksome. Festival organiser Martin Hickman told the Daily Echo: “We wanted to go back to a time when small festivals were fun and we have carefully selected a line up of great musicians who have that down home vibe and play good time Bluegrass and Americana, all played with verve and a smile, we think you will love it.”

The event sees an array of talent with many leading Bluegrass bands coming direct from the USA. The proceedings begin at 6pm through to 11.30pm on the Friday with the highlight being Lindsay Lou and the Flatbellys from Michigan USA for their first UK tour.

Also on the bill that night is Red Rooster Moving Co from Portland Oregon USA. Their recent travels have taken them to Italy where they have created a large following for their juke joint Americana style.

Other bands include Medicine Bend who were formed in the early 70s and had a short but illustrious career. For one night only, the sole surviving members showcase a few of those little heard songs.

The Saturday runs from noon to 11.30pm and boasts a barnstorming set from young band, Flats and Sharps. Authentic four part harmonies combined with strong individual instrumental skills make them one to watch.

Another import from across the pond is Hill Folk Noir from Boise in Idaho who also plays the Saturday. Other great bands include the Mountain Firework Company with front man Gareth McGahan who has already built up an impressive following both here in the UK and also the US.

Surrey collective New Hawleans Jug Band also play the Saturday night. They dress in period style and should be hard to miss.

Local Bluegrass favourites Bow Legged Skeeters kick off both Friday and Saturday, playing sweeping four part harmonies backed with some of the best picking you will see locally.

Of course there will also be over 35 real ale and local ciders on offer, with some specially brewed for the festival.
