RESPECTED stars of the UK folk scene Nick Wyke and Becki Driscoll are set to bring their fiddles to the Bournemouth Folk Club this Sunday evening at the Ocean View Hotel.

The North Devon duo produces a joyous collision of English traditional music and contemporary bowed strings.

Nick and Becki told the Daily Echo: “It’s a blend of influences. It comes from our backgrounds in different genres, but it’s based around English Traditional dance tunes and songs.

“We also like to mix in musical ideas from all the countries we’ve visited and people we’ve met.”

Becki grew up in Bridport having played with various local groups including the West Dorset Music Centre. Nick has lived in North Devon for as long as he can remember and plays fiddle, guitar, bass and sings.

The duo added: “We do a lot of work with people and music in the communities in which we live, so all those different types and ages of people inspire us creatively in loads of different ways.

“Musically, we are inspired by anything from Swedish murder ballads to improvised jazz and classical string quartets.”

They first collaborated as a fiddle duo on a busking trip around Spain and Portugal.

Since then, they have made a strong impact on the British folk scene and received national and international acclaim.

Their passion for English traditional music and the violin has led to the development of their unique style.

Becki's melodic, emotive violin and viola blend with Nick's driving fiddle chords and powerful vocals to create a rich, captivating sound.

“We’re working on new material for another album to follow our latest A Handful of Sky and planning collaborations with even more fantastic musicians.

“We’re doing quite a lot of writing at the moment, including some song-writing, which is great fun. Overall, we’re just finding lots of new things to do, to keep life fresh and exciting!”

Tickets for this gig £10 (NUS £5). The Bournemouth Folk Club is at Ocean View Hotel, East Overcliff Drive, Bournemouth. See the website bournemouthfolkclub.com for more.
