ANDRE Techine’s provocative drama is a film of two halves entitled Circumstances and Consequences, juxtaposing the trials and tribulations of characters whose fates collide in the French suburbs.
Doting mother Louise (Catherine Deneuve) tires to inspire her disenfranchised daughter Jeanne (Emilie Dequenne) to jump-start her life by sending her to a job interview with her old flame, Jewish lawyer Bleistein (Michel Blanc).
The interview goes badly and on the spur of the moment, Jeanne makes up a shocking story about how she was the victim of a racially motivated attack on a train and had a swastika carved into her stomach.
The national media gets hold of the story and Jeanne’s fib becomes a national scandal.
