ALTHOUGH not released until 1960, this feature-length documentary captures all the highlights of the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival.
Musical numbers are intercut with lingering scenes of Newport Har-bour, Narragansett Bay and yachts over the bay during the 1958 America’s Cup Trials.
Star performers include Chuck Berry, Thelonius Monk, Dinah Washington and Louis Armstrong.
Reviewing what was reportedly more than 100,000 feet of footage, co-director Bert Stern realised he lacked audience shots so set up chairs and benches over fake funeral grass in a studio and invited jazz critics and fans to view a rough cut as he flmed their reactions.
