BASED on a true story, Sweden’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2009 Oscars centres on a poor, young woman who in the early 20th century wins a camera in a lottery which alters her whole life.
Set in Sweden in the early 1900s, it’s a time of social change and war.
The camera enables Maria (Maria Heiskanen) to see the world through new eyes.
However, it also becomes a threat to her alcoholic womaniser of a husband, as it brings a charming photographer into her life.
