Young entrepreneurs get down to business

THE future entrepreneurs of Dorset launch their Young Enterprise companies this month. These young people are aged between 14 and 18 and will be advised by local businesses.

This fantastic programme gives the achievers the opportunity to learn skills and confidence that can’t be obtained in a classroom.

Twenty two Young Enterprise companies made up of over 230 young people have high hopes of making a profit and reaching the national finals.

In the current economic climate the young people are hoping their creativity and determination will help them be successful in their ventures. Not only do the achievers hope to make money but they will gain valuable skills such as communication, decision-making and business acumen.

Miss Lynne Kelly, link teacher from Parkstone Grammar school, says: “I personally think the YE programme is a fantastic opportunity.

“It allows students to gain the necessary life skills needed for the real world.

“When would they get the chance to present to a room full of strangers, run their own business and become financially literate at their young age?

“They improve their social skills – inter-personal skills – by working in a team and they also see that it is fine to fail because you learn by doing.”

Companies are advised by local business volunteers.

Sue Tattersall from J P Morgan has been an adviser for many years and this year won the regional gold award in recognition of her achievements.

She believes that “there is no substitute for ‘learning by doing’ and the Young Enterprise programme really encompasses all the skills and experiences young people need to make their CV more rounded for future employers.”

And she adds: “I derive much enjoyment and personal achievement from helping young people develop their skills and prepare them for the working environment.”

Young Enterprise South West has been first or second in four out of the last five years of national competitions.

Hannah Towner, the Dorset development manager, said of the programme: “Every year I am so impressed with the creativity and enthusiasm of the companies.

“Young people who may start the programme with nerves soon become essential directors of their company and build their self-confidence.

“This time of year is so exciting as new companies and friendships are formed. I wish every achiever this year success.”
