CARR: I'M OUT OF HERE
 |
| MOVING FORWARD: Richard Carr speaking to Julie Magee at Ravine Lifestyle's office in Canford Cliffs |
Entrepreneur Richard Carr has expanded on his plans to move away from the South Coast.
Just days after announcing that both his leisure and property businesses are in the hands of administrators, he told the Daily Echo: "I'm a bit tired of the problems I get when I'm here, the constant bickering and attacks.
"I will probably go to London. There are a lot of distressed bars and the market is much bigger. I can only do what I enjoy; creating things like nice bars and clubs."
Since the news that his bar and nightclub operation Future 3000 and property company Ravine Lifestyle have gone into administration, the 49-year-old, once constantly in the headlines, has kept a low profile.
After spending a weekend in Spain, he said: "I've got out of the way on purpose. There is always somebody who wants to have a go. It's a shame because people are attacking me for what has happened; it's not that I have wanted it to happen. I have created a lot of wealth and economic prosperity for the area.
"A lot of other people's livelihoods have been affected; staff with mortgages who are now worrying. It is a travesty for myself and for everybody in the organisation.
Speaking at Ravine Lifestyle's office in Canford Cliffs, the property developer said curtailing his lifestyle meant that his three-storey home in Lilliput would have to be put on the market.
"Let's not beat about the bush; I'm having to sell my own house. This is like a normal person having everything taken away from them except their motor car. It is a very serious situation.
"I can't afford the mortgage; I have to consolidate my position and get as much cash as I can get my hands on to buy a business. I have no income.
"I have worked tirelessly to save my companies and I'm obviously very upset but I'm a businessman and I have to be responsible for my actions.
"It is a significant blow to me; it's most of what I have got but I have to pick myself up and move forward. I have got to get sorted very quickly because I don't have any money."
He described property development as "a non-starter at the moment" and said all his interests had been tied up with building development and the leisure industry.
Ninety-five per cent of his personal wealth was invested in Future 3000 and Ravine Lifestyle.
"I was very bullish; I didn't see this coming," he admitted. "I have been down before in the early '90s and rebuilt the business. I'm 50 years old at the end of this year so I haven't got a lot of time but I will do it again."

|
Mr Carr pledged that flat schemes currently under construction would be completed and sold to repay the bank and other creditors, adding: "If any money is left after that I will pay myself."
He stressed that jobs at both companies were secure adding: "It is highly unlikely that any staff will lose their positions because of the administrations."
The realisation that his companies were in difficulties came last summer. He said: "The market was cooling on the property side. The credit crunch, particularly the inability of people to get mortgages, created a situation where the bank got to a stage where they felt uncomfortable.
"Future 3000 had cross guarantees with Ravine Lifestyle; it is unfortunate. I have regrets about the way I structured the business; with hindsight perhaps I would have secured one or the other. "
Mr Carr predicted that property prices would fall by another ten per cent adding: "I believe we will be in the doldrums until 2011.
"There are probably too many bars in Bournemouth. It is a highly competitive market."
He branded Bournemouth "tatty" and added that the town's tourist industry had been in decline for a long time.
"Other tourist towns in the UK have managed to move forward; Newquay is a very good example. The real problem is that Bournemouth has never had a business plan. Nobody ever really wants to accept that bars and clubs are important and employ a lot of people.
"There is no doubt that the tourist season has diminished dramatically. I've never thought the right way forward was drinking, drinking, drinking.
"There is far to much political interference with business in Bournemouth; I think that has destroyed the town. We carried on as if cheap flights and package holidays didn't exist. I don't think families want to come here; the days of seven or 14-day breaks have gone. Bournemouth is a weekend resort because it is so cheap to go elsewhere."

Families don't want to come here because people like you have made the town unsafe at night.
Cheerio. Don't come back.

I cant believe this man is looking to get peoples sympathy. He has lived of the profits of the binge drinking culture in bournemouth and has reaped the rewards and now it had backed fired. You do not deserve sympathy and the sooner you go the better. I have also noticed how quick the echo is to take away peoples comments on this person. Is it because the people of bournemouth are telling the truth. I wonder

Richard Carr has my sympathy.
Consider that, with the tide of morality having turned, and the low cost of alcoholic drinks from Supermarkets, the night club business is going to be a much smaller one in the future.
So how about moving into something that's expanding?
[bold]Holiday Accommodation[/bold]
For instance the holiday trade in Bournemouth has turned around and I personally have seen how impressed the holiday maker is with the superb beaches (surely among the best in the world) and the glorious New Forest, and the superb Perbecks hills and cliffs. Spain et al is becoming too expensive, too hot, and too foreign. And the burning sun with the high level of ultra-violet radiation is dangerous. The nightmare of the flight from and to London starts and ends the holiday with upsetting and unhealthy stress.
Did you know that Bournemouth has one of the highest ozone atmosphere levels in the world. This makes it a very relaxing sleepy place, ideal for the stress reducing healthy holiday, and retirement. Even the driving here is comparatively slow and calm - most of the time!
If you are young and want excitement, then London is the place to go, the night clubs are there; awaiting your enjoyment of a good night out.
[bold]Retirement Homes[/bold]
Then there is the retirement home business. A large house, full of character, consisting of a number of self contained flats, with a communal lounge and gardens, and private small plots for the keen gardener. The average council tax is now around £27 per week for a small retirement home, so the maintenance fee for a flat compares favourably and the occupant does not need to worry about maintenance problems. Some capital should be gained as a result of the move.
They are also secure and the awful soul destroying loneliness of old age is relieved.
But I expect these things have already been considered.

I have never met the man myself and must admit I have heard a few adverse comments. However you cannot take away the fact that, at the time, his bars and clubs were successful as he provided great venues that people enjoyed. Also for a few years now he has provided employment for a great many people. Going forward, into a stable economic future, I feel he will be a loss to the area.

Ok, Mr Carr may not be particularly ethical in his business choices, but he’s standing up, brushing himself down and starting over again. Good luck to him, I don’t begrudge anyone a livelihood. I just hope this time around he’ll get a decent financial advisor to help him protect himself more fully in the future!
Try and think about all the employees involved here that Mr Carr continues to give support and consideration to. He could just as easily say nothing to the press and give no indication to his employees of their potential future with his businesses when they are taken over.
He has a positive attitude and I’ve no doubt we’ll continue to hear from him in the future. Ever heard the expression ‘don’t kick a man when he’s down’?
Seems to me that a lot of the Richard Carr knockers would bray and gloat over anyone with a level of success coming a cropper.

Is Mr Carr not a normal person then?

The last few days have delivered such good news - going broke couldn'thave happened to a person more worthy. But then he isn't going to go broke unlike everyday people is he. Goodbye - don't bother coming back, Bournemouth and Poole will be happier places without you. No more sleeze, boring clubs and pubs which are full of underage drinkers. You can't ruin London, its already been done, and you won't find it quite so easy to be Mr Big there. Exactly the same will happen to you in London eventually - you got greedy and this is what happens. I never liked you when I met you and still don't like you now.

Does Mr Carr own shares in Newsquest? Every time he opens his mouth, the Echo reports it.
It's typical of these types that everyone else is to blame instead of them. He clearly did'nt learn the lessons of the early 90's.

Surely the fact that it has happened before would have made him more aware of the possibility of it happening again?!? I've worked for the man and his partners, they have little to no idea how the world works beyond the business world and it seems to be their downfall as not on his companies have failed but those partnered with them have failed or are failing.

Mr Carr, do you want sympathy, sorry but no way. You have attempted to hold Bmth Council to ransom in the past when you haven't got your own way over something, you made profit from Clubs and Bars in town, but what have you actually put back into the town yourself, NOTHING. Just take the profits over the years and lie about certain premises like Wiggle. Welcome to the real world.
Ps what is happening to the staff you employ or employed no mention about them yet, i do suppose they are the mennials in your grand campaign...

NB if bournemouth is tatty, him and the like have made it so you do not need to have low life attractions to make people come to this area and make a profit whilst doing it. How about a suggestion that was made to me from a work friend she said what about late night cafes (without alcohol) so that people can go and have a snack without drinking lots of people do not drink and like to stroll along the sea front and stop for refreshment.

"I'm going to have to sell my own house". Let's just hope it isn't near one of his establishments as I hear property devalues when one is kept awake half the night by drunks and sirens.
To say Bournemouth is becoming "tatty" is sour grapes by someone who does not seem to worry about the daytime economy and does not seem to want to promote Bournemouth as a premier family holiday resort but a haven for nightlife hostile to family orientated holiday groups.
Adios Mr.Carr

Lets get this very straight - It is a sad situation. No benefit whatsoever will come to Bournemouth or Poole with the loss of someone who has contintually provided jobs and a very large degree of economic wealth to the area, and to a large degree quite literally put the place on the map for a new generation of people. I worked within Richard's organisation for several years and am still involved in the night time economy nationally. The Bars and Clubs operated by Future 3000 were (and still are) of the highest standard, they have always provided what people want and are run on a day to day basis by some of the most competant people in the Business. It always shocks me just how quickly people wish to make adverse comments to a situation they dont fully understand, trust me - Bournemouth will not be a better place without Richard Carr, it will be a place missing someone not afraid to get out there, get things done and continually move forward, in a year from now people will miss him and the wealth he has bought to the area. And as a last question for those who think the night time economy of Bournemouth is a bad thing. What else will bring over £90 Million per year to the area to replace it - if it all fizzled out and people stopped coming to Bournemouth as a weekend destination...? The answer unfortunatly is very little.

Interesting comments. I visit Bournemouth often, usually to enjoy a good night out, often in his bars. I am not local but when I come down I stay in local hotels, eat in local restaurants and spend money in local shops. Richard Carr in my opinion has helped the local economy and Bournemouth. Just because people go out and drink do not make them louts. Always find it interesting when visionary's and entrepreneurs get it in the neck just for being successful.

Regardless of who the person is, when someone loses out on his or her businesses it must be hard for them to accept after all the hard work that has gone into it. However, as I said before, because of its history Bournemouth is a holiday resort, and the influx of so many establishments within the town whether owned by Richard Carr or anyone else has caused the demise of the town and its visitors.
Richard Carr would know this and with the added pressure of cheaper booze and the credit crunch it has come to this. Like wise with the building business, he must have seen the crunch coming as a business man.
My only gripe with Richard Carr is his reference to Bournemouth, when not alone, he has been part and parcel of the way it is now.
Wherever you go Mr. Carr, think before you leap.

I think that those of you that are mocking Richard Carr don’t realise what this guy has lost. Yes he may be cocky and he may be arrogant and seem to be in the headlines for sometimes the wrong reasons but he is the face of his business.
None of you slate the Directors and Shareholders of all the corporate companies that own all the other bars, pubs and lap dancing clubs in Bournemouth and Poole. I don’t see you criticising them?
This guy’s biggest fault seems to be that we all know who he is. Don’t get me wrong of course he has done well and he has made a fortune out of this town otherwise he would have a chauffer driven Bentley and a Gas Guzzling 4X4 but that’s his choice he earned it so let him enjoy it.
I think the fact is there are some very bitter and jealous people who as ever never like to see people get ahead and take pleasure in kicking a man when he is down.
I doubt that 99% of the posters on this site have even spoken to Richard Carr, as mentioned his businesses bring a great deal of employment to the towns let alone the contributions his business must have made to the local councils in terms of annual Business Rates and Planning Fees for all the developments over the years.
Maybe some of you should think before you type?

What a sad time for Bournemouth - the loss of somebody who stood up for what he believed in and created much employment and enjoyement for many people - i find it very sad the amount of 'spineless' people who seem to be pleased at Mr Carrs demise! what kind of people are we breeding in this country thats the question that has to be asked!Good luck Mr Carr i hope you change youre mind and stay in Bournemouth-the 'spineless' community will no doubt continue to comment but without action of course !

[/quote] [bold]ABSOLUTELY RIGHT - THE RISKS TAKEN BY ENTREPENURES LIKE RICHARD CARR ARE WHAT BOOSTS THE ECONOMY OF THE TOWN,PROVIDES JOBS AND INCOME FOR THE COUNCIL WITHOUT WHICH OUR COUNCIL TAX WILL RISE DRAMATICALLY - THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO CRITISE AND MOCK THE MAN ARE THOSE WHO HAVE NOTHING AND HAVE DONE NOTHING - IF YOU MUST POST NEGATIVE COMMENTS THAT HAVE NO FOUNDATION WHY DONT YOU AT THE SAME TIME TELL THE REST OF US WHAT YOUR ACHIEVMENTS ARE ,HOW THEY HAVE HELPED TO SCULPT BOURNEMOUTH AND IN WHAT WAY YOU HAVE GENERATED WEALTH FOR THIS TOWN .......... I THINK THE SILENCE MAY BE A LITTLE DEAFENING .THE LOSS OF RICHARD CARR TO THIS AREA IS GOING TO HAVE A MASSIVE IMPACT ,PEOPLE THAT VISIT THIS TOWN FOR ITS NIGHTLIFE USE ALL OTHER FACILTIES TOO SO THERES A SNOWBALL EFFECT IN WEALTH GENERATION ...WELL IT CAN WORK THE OTHER WAY TOO SO BEFORE YOU OPEN YOUR STUPID UNINFORMED AND IGNORANT MOUTH ENGAGE YOUR BRAIN .
BOURNEMOUTH HAS NEVER BEEN A 'FAMILY' RESORT DONT KNOW WHY ANYONE WOULD SEE IT AS SUCH ,THERES NOTHING FOR CHILDREN THAT WOULD HOLD THEIR INTEREST BEYOND THE FIRST DAY AND YOU WILL NEVER AND WILL NEVER HAVE SEEN GREAT SWARTHES OF FAMILIES IN BOURNEMOUTH BECAUSE ITS NOT LIKE SOUTHSEA,OR BLACKPOOL,AND IT MAY SUPRISE YOU TO KNOW THAT FAMILIES DONT SPEND MONEY LIKE THE YOUNGSTERS OUT ON THE TOWN AT NIGHT DO AND ITS INCOME THAT YOU NEED NOT WINDOWSHOPPERS.
FOR GOODNESS SAKE SEE A LITTLE BEYOND YOUR JEALOUSY RICHARD CARR WILL HAVE HAD LITTLE ADVERSE EFFECT ON ANY OF YOU,HOW CAN YOU VERBALLY DESTROY SOMEONE YOUVE NEVER MET UNLESS YOU ARE SOME KIND OF ARSE ?[/bold]
