Roadmap to safety

IN the past few days, you may have caught a new initiative designed to highlight the consequences of speeding.

The image of a frightened young girl standing in front of a car windscreen is accompanied by the thought provoking message: "Don't be the last person she ever sees."

A series of radio advertisements features the voices of children urging motorists to slow down.

The campaign has been launched by the Dorset Safety Camera Partnership and runs until January 6.

It is being supported by posters involving hospitals, doctors and dental surgeries, libraries and public houses.

The rationale behind the campaign is that it's Christmas and everyone is rushing round, thinking even less about how fast they are driving.

The reality is that many of us are guilty of speeding to a greater or lesser degree the entire year round, along with failing to pay sufficient attention to the way we drive in general.

Speeding is just one of the consequences of that general failure. With this in mind, at the beginning of 2008 we are launching our own initiative on road safety, aimed at helping cut deaths among young drivers.

The statistics for the past year make grim reading and a number of families in Dorset have been left to deal with the consequences. Our campaign will be primarily about education for those who are new to the dangers of getting behind the wheel of a potentially lethal piece of machinery.

But it will also be about encouraging a debate. It starts on January 1, so please join in. It's in all our interest.
