Appeal to protect seahorse habitat
STEER CLEAR: Pregnant male spiny seahorses are under threat from boat owners anchoring in their eelgrass habitat
STEER CLEAR: Pregnant male spiny seahorses are under threat from boat owners anchoring in their eelgrass habitat

PREGNANT seahorses are under threat from boats anchoring off popular Studland beach.

Dorset Wildlife Trust is appealing to owners to avoid their eelgrass habitat and only drop anchor in areas of clear sand.

"This is probably the best site in the UK for seahorses and pipefish but there is a threat to the eelgrass meadows from the many boats that anchor there, especially in the summer months," said Peter Tinsley, marine conservation officer.

"The anchors drag and pull the grass up by the roots," he said.

There have been repeated sightings of pregnant seahorses off the busy beach this summer and conservationists are concerned for their welfare.

Pregnant males include both spiny and short snouted seahorses which pair for life, with the females depositing their eggs in the male's pouch for fertilisation.

“Until Studland Bay can be designated as a marine conservation zone, we are appealing to boat owners not to anchor in the eelgrass."
Peter Tinsley, marine conservation officer

There have also been sightings of all six species of pipefish, which are close relatives, in the eelgrass meadows which lie in only two metres of water.

Seahorses have recently been added to the list of protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, which prohibits damage to their habitat.

REQUEST: Boats should be mooring in areas of clear sand

"The government's Marine Bill should make effective protection possible by creating marine conservation zones and Studland has been highlighted by the Wildlife Trusts as being worthy of such protection," said Mr Tinsley.

"Until Studland Bay can be designated as a marine conservation zone, we are appealing to boat owners not to anchor in the eelgrass.

"When the water is clear, it is usually easy to see any vegetation, so please try to stick to areas of clear sand only," he added.

It's good to see you've allowed readers to comment on the story about protecting pregnant sea-horses, which I totally agree with.
It's very odd, however, that the same facility is not available for the residents of the Kings Park area to comment on how to protect their community from travellers who have clearly bull-dozed their way in to set up camp once again.

It a good idea to protect these species its important to save all species.

Its hardly suprising the echo took the comments of regarding the travellers...there were a lot of comments that were out of order...you only got yourselfs to blame there

I guess some people were making comments about the travellers that were inapropriate, we need to make our point without getting too rude.
PS Shame about the sea horses they are one of my favourite creatures I hope the boats will be careful

I just wish the echo would remove the "out of order" comments and leave the rest. I suspect the Council's Gypsy huggers have won the day.

At least the Echo gives Bournemouth residents the opportunity to comment on the failings of their Council. All too often, this is denied to Poole residents in respect of Poole Council. For example, there is currently an item on this site about the Local Government Ombudsman criticising Poole Council, part of which reads Poole 'council has been told that being less defensive about complaints would lead to more of them being resolved promptly.' Why does the Echo treat Poole Council as a protected species and not allow comment against them? (Sorry this comment bears no reference to short snouted seahorses.)

I titally agree with you. Work hard, pay taxes, respect law and order, etc etc.....As far as I am concerned you have every right to comment. It's the benefit scrounging low-life's who should receive a "wake up and contribute to society warning,"

The comments were not out of order, just simply the truth.

As for the beautiful Sea Horses, I support the need to protect them 100%, before it is too late and they become another victim of human selfishness.

The Echo site does some strange things. My comment above should have been in reply to :- scooteria, Westbourne, but for some unexplained reason got tagged against the comment by "pierman"

That's life, as they say !!
