HUNDREDS of people turned out for carols and Father Christmas’s tour around Upton during a special event on Wednesday night.

Families turned out to watch as the jolly fellow in red paraded through the streets of Poole in a VW Beetle, decorated with banners, tinsel and paper chains.

He was followed by some snowmen in a Triumph classic car and the snow prince and princess of the parade, travelling in a convertible BMW.

Karen Wright, town clerk for Lytchett Minster & Upton Town Council, said it was the best turnout they had ever seen.

“It was a real success with around 300 people coming along,” she said.

“We had posters put up around the town so that children could come along and see Father Christmas arrive before the community carol service.”

She added: “I think in total the event probably cost the town council around £100 to run, as it was a real community effort, with the town councillors themselves helping to marshal the event.”

The Salvation Army was also on-hand to provide music for the carol service at Upton Cross, which was led by Reverend Jean de Garis. Children from Upton Infants School Choir made little lanterns to hold as they sang. Residents were then invited to enjoy mince pies and refreshments at St Dunstan’s Lounge.

“It was a very good, sweet event.” Karen added, before saying that plans are already being made for next year’s event.
