SCHOOLCHILDREN with lanterns lit up a soggy night in Poole with a colourful Christmastime procession.

The traditional lantern parade through the town saw hundreds of families turn out despite the wet and windy weather.

As well as 250 children, hundreds of spectators also lined the streets to the Guildhall for the event.

Led by the deputy mayor of Poole, Cllr Peter Adams, and Town Crier, David Squire, the lantern parade left Falkland Square and proceeded down the High Street.

Lovely lanterns created by youngsters from local schools lit the journey and rousing music was provided by Poole Sea Cadets Marching Band.

Once at the Guildhall, they were joined by the Old Town Conservation Group and St James' Church choir for carols and mince pies.

The event was organised by Poole Town Centre Partnership.

Hannah Porter, from the organisation, said: "It was a lovely event despite the weather.

"We're so pleased so many people came out for it. There were people lining the streets and Poole Sea Cadets marching band were brilliant."
