This year's John Lewis Christmas ad was released this morning to much anticipation.

The ad was made by the creator of the This Girl Can adverts, and the store said they "definitely wanted" a girl as the main character for this year.

Featuring an unknown singer called Aurora performing Half a World Away by Oasis, it's the story of  a lego building, football playing, telescope-using girl, who wants to send the lonely old man in the moon a Christmas present...

It comes complete with an app, and of course the song is avaiable to buy too.

But it's also designed to raise awareness of Age UK, and  John Lewis is encouraging staff and customers to join up with their local branch of the charity to care for elderly people who might otherwise be alone over the holiday.

Craig Inglis, Customer Director at John Lewis said: "We hope it inspires people to find really special gifts for their loved ones and through our partnership with Age UK, raises awareness of the issue of loneliness amongst older people and encourages others to support in any way they can.”

According to Age UK, 60% of older people don’t expect to experience any festive happiness over the Christmas season.

Esther Jackson, Marketing and Fundraising Director at Age UK said: “This is a really exciting collaboration and coming together like this is a brilliant opportunity to raise awareness of the issue of loneliness at Christmas time in a powerful, heart-warming way.

"We hope it will really strike a chord with the nation - driving not only awareness, but donations and actions to help some of the million older people who go for a month without speaking to anyone.”

And John Lewis aren't the only ones to encourage thinking of your neighbours this year. Here's TK Maxx's Love Your Neighbour campaign.
