Ford C-Max 1.6 Titanium

AS FAMILY cars go, the latest version of Ford’s C-Max is bound to be a serious consideration for those with kids and lots of gear in tow.

Basically a taller Focus, practicality is the name of its game.

The rear seats are made for kids. There’s an aircraft-style tray that folds down for food and drink and the Titanium Family Pack – £525 extra – adds window blinds as well.

The pack also adds a powered tailgate – handy if you need to get in the boot while carrying bags of shopping, or a load of beach stuff, for example.

The model I tested, from Keith Motors in Christchurch, also had the Convenience Pack fitted, which adds Active Park Assist – a clever system that parks the car for you – front and rear parking sensors and foldable mirrors, which automatically tuck in when you lock the car.

The dash is near-identical to the Focus’s – modern and full of kit, with a DAB radio, dual zone climate control, Bluetooth, hill start assist, tyre deflation detection, cruise control and keyless start among the tech inside.

I’m a big fan of Ford’s new design language, it makes every car in the range look aggressive and sporty.

To be honest, the 1.6 petrol 125PS engine in this test car felt under-powered. I took it on a run from Bournemouth to Bristol on some fairly slow, hilly roads and it ran out of puff in high gears.

But this should be easily remedied by opting for either the 150PS Ecoboost engine, which is a far more sprightly unit, or any of the turbo diesels.

The Ecoboost only adds a few hundred quid to the price, while the entry-level diesel adds £1,000.

Any of those engines would give those looking for a little more poke what they want.

But this is not a performance car, and as a workhorse for families it’s going to be hard to beat.

This model comes in at £19,195 on the road, including all the first-year fees. The range starts at £17,195 for the base 1.6 Zetec, and tops out at £22,495 for the 2.0 TDCI PowerShift.
