THE inventor of a cool box which plays music while you party has put it before a TV audience of up to 30 million.

Arran Campbell describes himself as “the guy down the pub who has a great idea”.

He hit on the idea for MyKoolBox after watching a friend struggle along Bournemouth beach with a cool box in one hand and a stereo in the other.

The Bournemouth-based entrepreneur has appeared on CNBC’s Squawk Box series Pop Up Start Up, which began last Friday and follows aspiring manufacturing entrepreneurs who compete for £20,000 each week.

He said: said: “I’m the guy down the pub who has a great idea and I’m following it through. From a dream, to pitching, patents and prototypes. Having the ability to go to China, build a pop up shop and realise my ambition – this show has been incredible.”

Mr Campbell has been raising money to launch MyKoolBox via crowd-funding website Indiegogo.

The invention will retail at £69 and its splash-proof speakers will play music from phones and MP3 players via Bluetooth or a 3.5mm jack. Owners will be able to replace its side panels with accessories and personal branding.

Mr Campbell said: “We’ve come a long way since 2013 when we first came up with the idea to create a cool box that plays music. Since the age of 18, I have worked with young people as a holiday rep in amazing, sunny places like Spain, Greece and Mexico.“I was with friends at a beach party in my hometown of Bournemouth when a friend came up to me cradling a blue cool box in one arm and a large work stereo in the other. First of all I thought ‘Wow! he’s carried those things miles – poor guy!’ and secondly ‘I wonder if you could put them together to make it easier?’”

His Indiegogo pitch says: “With increasingly hot summers, people require efficient cool boxes for their picnics. In most cases they also take some music play-out system and use their smart phones to find locations, chat and exchange comments with others.

“The regular sight of holiday makers heaving rucksacks, cool boxes and audio speakers like desert explorers, stomping across sand dunes, or even setting up for a party in the back garden indicates that a more integrated solution is needed.”

He says he has spent “countless nights” designing and creating multiple prototypes. Manufacturing will happen in China, with “massive” production expected to start in June and the product being shipped to backers in July.
