A GROUP of scantily-clad students braved the rain and cold to take part in a run for cancer research.

Jade Clarke, who is studying events management at Bournemouth University, organised an ‘undie run’ on Friday at Talbot campus, in aid of Stand Up to Cancer.

In America the craze has seen thousands of people disrobe and flamboyantly scurry through the streets in little more than their pants.

Despite Bournemouth’s students proving more reserved, Jade said she was hopeful the trend would spread and help promote a cause she is passionate about.

“It is 10 years since my cousin, Darren, died from cancer and I wanted to do whatever I could to help people facing similar experiences,” she added.

“I know some people have been quite nervous about doing this just in their underwear, but once they do it their inhibitions drop and they just have a great time.”

Before taking on the 1km run, the group limbered up by doing some Zumba and volunteers also collected donations from passers-by.

Script writing student Lee Toye was the only member of the contingent to strip down just to his underwear – sporting only a blue pair of boxer shorts to protect his modesty. “There were supposed to be five others coming who were going to just be in their underwear too but they haven’t turned up – I think they are still in bed,” said Lee.

“I have wanted to do something like this for ages, and this way I won’t get in any trouble for doing it.”
