THE Daily Echo’s lavish book illustrating the history of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra has arrived.

From today, you will be able to get your copy of The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, From 1893 to the World.

The book tells the story of the BSO with the help of an astounding collection of photographs from throughout its history, drawing on both the Daily Echo’s archive and that’s of the orchestra itself.

It begins with the founding of the Bournemouth Municipal Band by Dan Godfrey in 1893.

In the early days, Bournemouth welcomed such distinguished visitors as Holst, Sibelius and Walton as the orchestra’s reputation grew.

The 160-page hardback takes the story through many high points and occasional crises, right up until the present day, with the return of the BSO’s Proms in the Park concerts.

There is a foreword by chief conductor Kirill Karabits.

It is the latest in the Echo’s successful series of books including Coast, Dorset Then and Now and last year’s sell out publication on AFC Bournemouth.

Editor and Head of News at the Daily Echo, Andy Martin who wrote the text said: “The BSO is an incredible institution which has been an integral part of the cultural life of the area since 1893.

“We are very, very proud to have had a very long association with the BSO, as I have discovered looking at our archives going back 100 years.

“We are absolutely delighted to have published what will be a fantastic account of the life and times of the BSO.”

The book is out in time for the BSO’s new season at the refurbished Lighthouse in Poole on Wednesday, October 12. Titled Walton’s Late Masterpiece, the evening will see Kirill Karabits conducting, with pianist Francesco Piemontesi.

The programme consists of William Walton’s Symphony No. 2, Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien and Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.

The book costs £14.95 and the following stockists will take delivery today, with more to follow.
